5 stars (Great introduction to chemistry...) - this is an excellent introductory chemistry textbook.... it is great for the last year of highschool.. or for bridging from highschool to unviersity.. it isn't that deep enough for most first year chemistry courses... but reading through this book before OR while you are in ur first year course will greatly help you understand the material... because this book doesn't assume u know a lot about the subject already... cuz face it guys... nobody tries to remember stuff in highschool.. i personally just wanted to get it over with... therefore I forgot everything ...... but in university ur mentality changes.. u actually want to learn.. not just get 90 and get it over with.. that's why I bought this the summer before my classes started.. and went through it a little everyday... well my First Year class used Raymond Chang's CHemistry book (more advanced than this one) ... but I found it much easier, because I reviewed during the summer... and when I hit a topic that was hard.. i would reference this book.. read it.. then go back to Chang's and read the material... this helped a lot because this book assumes no previous knowledge.... so it's good for ppl like me.. for the few out there who actually cared in highschool.. and remember nething... this book is a waste.. because it isn't deep enough for first year chem courses (it is deep enough for non science major chem courses.. but not the hardcore first year general chem course) hope this helps 5 stars (Life saving personal tutor) - I recently took chemistry part II after not having chemistry for several years. This book was a life saver. I was able to pull many examples from it to guide me when I did my homework. Chemistry is tough enough by itself, but this book really helped. All the answers are there so you can test yourself on one part, and then see the answers with explinations on another part. Everything was easy to understand in this book. I highly recommend this... 5 stars (Get Ready for Titrations!) - Quantitative Chemical Analysis is a text intended for the first semester of Analytical Chemistry, which is known as Quantitative Analysis at my school. It is a course that is usually required for chemistry, chemical engineering, and biochemistry majors, as well as chemistry minors. This course follows second semeter general chemistry and broadens on the topics covered in that course. It is heavily based on calculations, however the calculations do not require any mathematics beyond basic algebra but do require extensive use of the quadratic formula for equilibrium problems. The book is not visually very impressive because it is in black and white with orange highlights, but this is understandable considering the small market for a text like this one. Chapters 0 - 5 of the text cover introductory material like stoicmetry, error, and statistics, and probably will not be covered in class. Chapters 7 - 25 are the heart of the material for most Quant classes. These chapters can be grouped into a few categories: chemical equilibrium, titrations, electrochemistry, and instrumental techniques such as chromatography and spectrophotometry. The book treats these subjects well and devotes enough material to specific concepts to make the information clear to the reader. Many useful examples and problems are given, and the excellent solutions manuel contains detailed answers to ALL of the problems in the text book. Harris also gives several shortcuts for solving problems. In particular, his explanation of the streamline equation for titration problems was very useful and made these problems much less tedious. He also includes information about topics of interest to biochemistry, and features textboxes about the applications of analytical procedures. I'd say that this is a great text for analytical chemistry. The main problem with a first semester analytical chemistry class is not that the problems are very difficult, it is that they are V... 5 stars (My Story with Chemistry and Silberberg) - I am a chemistry major, that does not translate to "I like chemistry" but more along the lines that it was the only feasible premedical degree major. I never did chemistry in High School and suffered tremendously with the thought of majoring in a science that I was unfamiliar with. What if I hated it? What if I wasnt any good at it? these were questions that haunted me prior to starting my degree. When I did commence, I found textbooks to be very costly and wanted the best for my money. I realized that the price of a textbook does not make it good, nor the length of it. In saying so I started my chemistry studies with two books, one known as Basic Concepts of Chemistry by Malone, published by Wiley and the second was this. Chemistry the Molecular Nature of Matter and Change by Silberberg, published by Mcgraw Hill. The first book helped establish an understanding of the fundamentals of chemistry, it was an excellant transition from the layman's english into the scientific paradigm. However when one is doing undergraduate chemistry especially in a premedical degree, it ends up not only being a study but a competition. I found both these books to take me, an Individual who knew absolutely nothing about chemistry without any prior education in the science to someone who is now relaxed even with Organic Chemistry. My liking and my understanding of chemistry came directly from these two books. I still treasure them to this day and would suggest anyone in my position to get these books. I have seen and in detail read over 13 general chemistry books from Cheng to Atkins and even Zumdahl. I would deem these two (Malone and Silberberg) to be the best of all of them. However I do suggest that you peruse through various textbooks in a library prior to buying as an author's writing style matters a lot. Most people who have an issue with Silberberg see him as being too pleonastic however I would think that he gives substan... 5 stars (The best book for chem majors) - After one term of having this book, I decided to become a chemist. It grabbed me really hard and made me realize the complexity and wonder of chemistry (something I hadn't experienced with freshman chem.) If you are a chemistry major, this is definitely the book you will want to use. If your prof is using a different text, I'd definitely keep a copy of this one to use as a second opinion, at least. It is extremely well-written and it's written at a high level. In other words, it doesn't just string you along and give you the basics... it delves deeply into reaction mechanisms and what is actually happening in each reaction. Product yields for many reactions are included, and this is quite useful. The writing style makes you learn a new way of thinking - that of a scientist. At times, the syntax is a little "brainy" (they refer to acetone by its IUPAC name, "propanone", for instance, and they refer to ethylene oxide as "oxacyclopropane".) I had an earlier version of this book in class when I took organic many years ago, but the revisions are mostly in presentation and in the problem sets. True, the problems in each chapter are not always good. If your instructor is good, they will provide their own problems to supplement the book's. But my suggestion is to go ahead and just do a web search for old exams and problems given by profs at other schools. Many of these are great and will give you tons of insight. For those who have already graduated, this is a good and up-to-date book to keep with you in your graduate studies or in the lab if you work in such a capacity. 5 stars (I Love Vollhardt) - After perusing several other texts at different colleges, I have come to the conclusion that the Vollhardt book is indeed a well done text. Although more examples would have been nice, I feel that the reactions are done in a straightforward manner and the Chemical Highlights provided are fantastically interesting. The Via... 5 stars (Great for understanding all that is "Chemistry") - Chemistry can be interesting and it can be difficult to understand. This book addresses both of these areas quite well. This is a book that you study from, as well as read. For anyone who is preparing to take a Chemistry class, this book is well worth investigating, because this book, in its 20 Chapters, covers every principle, formula, idea, and topic that will be covered in class. My CHEM 100 course used this as our text, and we covered only half of the book (at a Community College in Maryland). I learned a lot from the course and from this book. I heartedly recommend it! For grandmom to read on your drive to DisneyWorld???? Oh, maybe not. Especially if she's driving. 4 stars (Best of the liberal arts texts) - There are two people that would be interested in this book - those that are enrolled in a liberal arts chemistry course, and those that are just interested in learning about chemistry. This book suits either type of person admirably. While setting up a liberal arts course in chemistry (i.e., Chemistry for Non-science Majors), we previewed a number of possible texts. This one, in my mind, stood above all the others that I looked at. There are a number of reasons why: 1. The scope - this book covers a vast number of topics, from basic structure of the atom to environmental chemistry to toxins and drugs to combustion and energy. We are designing a survey course, and this spread is ideal. Other texts tended to focus too much, especially on environmental issues (e.g., the ACS's Chemistry in Context). 2. Descriptive, non-mathmatical. Since this course has no prerequisites, not even grade 10 math, we needed a book that minimised mathematics. Other books, such as Kelter/Carr/Scott's Chemistry: World of Choices, was too mathematical for this type of course. 3. The pictures - this book simply looks good. Thus, if you're looking for a text for a liberal arts chemistry course, or i... 5 stars (cheap price, good condition) - book had no highlighting or writing in it. cover was somewhat bent when delivered but not too bad. all in all, a good buy. 4 stars (language of the text) - The manner in which the text is written is very helpful to those like myself who are new to Organic Chemstry; however, the referals to Chapter... for this and Chapter...for more information on this, makes it difficult to read the actual text sometimes. 1 stars (This book sucks!) - I had to buy this book for my Organic Class and I hate it! If I am going to pay textbook prices for a book, I expect it to be professionally written, not shifting into first and second person and speaking in sentence fragments. I was supposed to keep it for 2nd semester, but I hated it so much I sold it back after first semester was over. What a waste of money. ... 4 stars (Trades readability for depth and rigor) - This text is best suited for very good students who are motivated, comfortable reading English at a high level and mathematically adept: other students would be served much better by a different book. It contains far more material than could possibly be covered in a standard freshman general chemistry sequence, even with a good class. The authors assume that their audience is composed of the students I described initially (I am told it is the textbook at MIT), and leave it to the instructor to "break it down" for the students. Initially, I was not fond of this book, but I have slowly changed my mind, and I believe I have a better grasp of introductory chemistry thanks to the extra depth it goes to and the challenges it made me rise to. 2 stars (Could be much better) - It is because of textbooks such as this one that students lose interest in chemistry, and, worse, science in general. Yes, it is filled with LOTS of information, but there are many instances in which otherwise relatively simple concepts are twisted into something incomprehensible. In some cases, it seemed that the authors went out of their way to explain a topic in the most convoluted manner possible. Come on guys, chemistry is complex enough as it is, so rather than write a tome displaying how much YOU know about the topic, how about a more "student friendly" textbook that doesn't so readily confirm most people's suspicians that chemistry is as dry as saw dust. 5 stars (Excellent Intro Text) - This text was used in 1999-2000 at Oregon State University for the 100-level General Chem sequence for non-science majors. It is an excellent text with a (generally) friendly approach to introductory topics, and there are many nice photographs and discussion boxes containing info about practical chem applications. For some reason, the authors include a significant section on organic chemistry in chapter 2, far before they discuss bonding.... Other than th... 1 stars (False Ad!) - This book is not Hardcover as stated in the ad. The book is not for sale in the US and Canada and it is clearly marked on the cover. It's violating the Copyright Act. I gave it one star because there was anything lower than that. 5 stars (BEAUTIFUL BOOK) - THANKS SO MUCH FOR THE BOOK - IT WAS RIGHT IN TIME FOR CLASS! GREAT USED CONDITION - EXACTLY AS LISTED...THANKS AGAIN! A++++ 2 stars (This book will do more to confuse the student) - This book is so poorly organized that even the instructor who taught from it did not go through it sequential manner. Difficult subject matter is not covered in big picture to small detail way, but instead is spread through out the book with little or no information on WHY things in organic chemistry work they way they do, and then it is not even cohesively brought to a summary. There are not nearly enough mechanisms nor complicated synthesis. It does touch on retro synthetic analysis but then offers very little opportunity for the student to practice complicated and varied synthesis. The problems given at the end of the chapter are way to simplistic! It seems that this book tries to complicate Org much more than neccessary. ... 4 stars (Do The Problems!) - Excellent job of explaining basics of chemistry. The book is the written equivalent of getting a lot of hands-on lab time. By understanding the many examples, and attempting the numerous problem sets, you should get a very good understanding of crucial topics like basic stoichoimetry. None of the topics are especially hard, as presented here. Some of you may recall the various Schaum's Outline series of books, which are basically just big bundles of questions, wrapped in a skimpy explanatory framework. This book is a significant improvement over that approach. ... 3 stars (Yes, but with restrictions) - This is an excellent book that uses illuminating diagrams and examples to explain fundamental concepts. It is by no means, however, an easy reader. To understand the concepts you must read the chapters and do the problems at least 3 to 4 times. (if not more). I worked very hard in orgo, which is one of the reasons why I did well in it. The only reason that kept this rating from being higher, was the solutions manual and the chapter on stereochemistry. The solutions manual is very selective in it's explanations. The solutions to the problems are not explained in a way that everyone can understand it. A solutions manual should always include detailed explanations of every problem, and this solutions manual certainly doesn't do that. Then, on the flip side, if you thorougly understand the chapter before attempting the problems at the end of each chapter, then the solutions manual is an excellent guide. Chapter 5, the stereochemistry chapter, at least all of it, except section 5.19, is extremely poorly written. Stereochemistry is a very tough and important subject, and although the chapter was 50 pages long, it was written very inadequately with examples that don't exemplify simple concepts. Get a model set to learn stereochem, I finally learned at the end of Ochem 2, but that was because I finally understood the basics, and understood that it was extremely easy. Overall, this book is not for someone that doesn't have an interest in ochem, but for someone that takes passion with the subject. I never went to class, but i loved the subject, so the book, for me was excellent. If you love chemistry-BUY THIS BOOK. 5 stars (One of the best available) - This is one of the best sophomore level o-chem text available. 5 stars (Great chemistry textbook for college freshmen) - Though many people would find this book distasteful, it is an extremely good source of information for both basic and intermediate chemistry. It is obviously not a book any student can handle, but with a good background in basic chemistry, the book will take the student a long way down the path of chemistry. The book uses colorful pictures and graphs to show the reader what the chemistry looks like in real life rather than just teaching the bare concept. Chemistry is not about doing word problems; it is about actually seeing the results and learning to analyze these results. If you prefer to just get through chemistry and "learn" how to do problems without learning the real applications, choose another book. If you actually want to learn chemistry, this is the perfect book for you. As opposed to the average textbook that drags a subject matter on, this book is very concise and moves on after showing a derivation of an equation or one sample problem. Obviously this book may seem hard and seemingly impossible to comprehend at times, but a good recommendation is to get enough sleep before reading the book because it is much denser than other introduction to chemistry textbooks. 4 stars (Pretty Good) - I never actually used this book; I TAed for a class that used it. I ended up reading alot of it and thought that it was pretty good, but didn't cover all the math and derivations that were used in the course. Its a good book for basic general chemistry, but it does not explain the math very well. I also wouldn't reccommend it for students who have never taken chemistry at all because its probably too advanced. Take home message: its a more advanced general chem book, but fails miserably in explaining the math. 5 stars (excellent) - I have read the other reviews, but I think this is an excellent text for general chemistry (or introductory courses). 1 stars (Only thoughts: WTF!!) - I helped teach three terms of upper division biochemistry with this book and this book is terrible!! Don't get this confused with the Stryer book (although he is listed as an author, the book IS NOT written in his style). For non-biochem people, get the real Stryer book and for biochem people get the Matthews or the Voet book. 1 stars (OMG! A how to manual for a badly written book) - I needed to purchase this book for my graduate class in biochemistry. I found it to be NOT user friendly in the least. Most books I have used for biochemistry come with a great set of definitions. This book not only doesn't come with an appendix with definitions but doesn't explicitely define words in the text. I finally found the "definitions" appendix at the only website (how nice of them...and how cheap can you get. Most books if they have a website also have definitions in the back). I should also mention it does not have a thorough index. Major subjects are neither defined nor shown in the index. Several times I had to go to either my organic chem book (Morrison & Boyd...great book), the Lippencotes (spelling) biochemistry review text (also a great concise book), or my under graduate biochemistry book (and study guide. Garrett and Grisham) to find information due to either the lack of information in this book or difficulty in finding it. Also, the layout of the book is terrible. Although proteins are now THE significant phase of biochemistry, the introduction of DNA and mRNA in later portions of the book is rediculous. If you follow the basic flow of genetic information from DNA to RNA to Protein it is much more easily understood. Throwing in the flow of genetic information at chapter 5 and later in chapter 27 discussing DNA replication, RNA synthesis and splicing (ch 28) and protein production (ch 29) makes no sense whatsoever. The order is correct but to place this information at the back of the book when it is necessary to un... The book refers to info in previous written books which I do not own. This info should be included in this book! The first 4 chapters tend to cover the science aspect of the diet...For me a simple statement would do since I don't have any interest in the rest or even understand most of it to be simply honest. 5 stars (Finally!!! Chemistry Made Easy!!!) - This is the most comprehensive lecture book published. Considering this is a college level text, it is very easy to understand - easy enough for high school students. The authors ease their way, not jump around, into every topic. Also, all examples (including mathematical expressions and equations) are explained in easy, step-by-step format. This text includes one of the most interactive, if not the best, CD-Rom I've ever worked with. All topics are high-lighted per each section per chapter - and with plenty of videos, a deeper understanding of all materials covered is achieved. Along with the CD-Rom, an on-line access code is included. Homework, pre-tests and post-tests navigate and help you in your weakest areas. The biggest high-light of the on-line access is you can reach a Live tutor from the comfort of your own home - an ensured success! This text also comes in a split-volume version. I highly recommend purchasing this version (helps keep the backpack a little lighter). Last, but not least, I also recommend purchasing the Survival Guide corresponding to the text. 4 stars (Amazon.com, please check your spelling) - According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, a principle is a comprehensive and fundamental law, doctrine or assumption; a principal is a person who has controlling authority or is in a leading position. Zumdahl correctly named his book "Chemical PRINCIPLES". Amazon.com, please follow suit. 4 stars (Good and bad) - The main strength of the book is its large amount of interesting and largely error-free problems. Unfortunately, some of the more advanced material isn't really well explained. A good example is the book's coverage of particle-in-a-box: it's covered well enough for a beginning student to solve some problems, but without the more thorough follow up you get in a quantum class, you're just pushing symbols. The same goes for many of the other, somewhat more advanced topics in the book - MO theory, gas dynamics, etc. It may have made pchem and inorganic a little easier, but it made for frustrating reading at the time. 5 stars (Information) - This book is the current book for Chemistry 107 at the University of Illinois, taught by none other than Professor Zumdahl. 2 stars (Conceptual Cemistry text review) - Well, it looks like I'm giving yet another one of my college textbooks a less than stellar review. This particular book was the required text for Chemistry 1010 at my college. Extremely expensive is how I feel about this book, since unlike my intro Psych book, which cost just as much, I find this one to be both confusing and patronizing. I had a slave driver for a Honors Chem teacher in high school, so I expected Chemistry to be easy, since I later found out that in high school I had taken the equivalent of a Chemistry class required of college level Chemistry majors. My professor was fairly good. He made it a point of explaining all the math and all the other mumbo-jumbo in this text. He had to do that a lot. Why, you ask? Because, this book, I swear, was written for a sixth grader. It comes across as such, especially in the first few chapters, where they talk about atoms and molarity, elements and compounds. It isn't until the later chapters, when you get to learn about things I still cannot even spell, that the author finally becomes serious. But still, the weird jokes about the neutron who went to the bar, the pictures of the author's wife and family members strewn about, and the corny cartoon characters trying to make Chemistry equations "fun" are just that-sappy and VERY corny. I had to repeatedly look at the cover of the book to make sure I was not reading a child's Chemistry text. And, come the day of the final, most of my classmates are more than willing to get rid of this text, which for most of us has served us well as a paperweight. I didn't even get to use it for that-my roommate is a Chemistry major and had an even bigger Chemistry book to use for that purpose. I spent $102 on this thing that masquerades as a college level Chemistry text, but in reality reads like it was meant for an uneducated 12 year old. The vast majority of us in this class did not use this book. We had a fairly decent pr...
