Understanding the Old Testament Abridged 4th Edition

5 stars (Fleshes out the Bible) - No question the Old Testament is a great read, but face it, the original audience for this work is long dead and buried. Anderson's standard text on the world of the Old Testament is excellent in bringing the ancient world and the context for the collection that is the Old Testament to light. Reading the Bible without Anderson you get a story about some guy named Abram who took a walk one day and had some trouble with his new neighors. Reading it with Anderson, you get a deeper understanding of where Abraham came from, where he was headed, and how the belief of early Judahism developed through and in conflict with those of the neighboring Canaanites. The agrarian focused religion of the Canaanites get's it's own hearing as a people's attempt to make sense of the life around them. "Understanding the Old Testament" then provides this level of insight and background for all the other books of the Old Testament. How and why we now have the expression of the Jewish people's understanding of God gains more texuture and depth. 4 stars (Fascinating insights on ancient biblical events!) - An amazing, descriptive, objective, factual read about the beliefs, people and events that went on in ancient biblical times. Some great pictures too! I was captivated and fascinated! 3 stars (In depth survey following historico-critical methods) - Anderson uses easy to read sentences and aims his OT introduction at the lay person, but will be useful more to students and pastors because of the content. I was somewhat disappointed that he has nothing on Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement). R.K. Harrison's Intro to the OT is much more comprehensive, including discussion using both historico-critical methodology and conservative approaches, whereas Anderson assumes that the historico-critical method is the only way to go. Nevertheless, the information is readily accessible and easy to read, and illustrated well. ...

Lamb - The Gospel According to Biff- Christ-s Childhood Pal

5 stars (funny and intelligent- it hurts!!) - This is one of the funnier books I have read in a long time. My family kept coming in the room to see what I was laughing at. Someone gave me this book when I was really ill and the laughter was sorely needed. It served it's purpose. Even to the religious, I imagine it would be hard not to laugh. If you can't laugh at yourself... especially when someone is so intelligently poking fun at you? Then it's just a shame- because this book is too funny to be missed... it has been circulated through my family and friends and everyone has had a good laugh! 5 stars (Biff is THE MAN) - I laughed out loud until it hurt - and it felt great. I would never have left xtianity if the followers I encountered were full of the good humor Biff displays. For all of the laughs, there are also insights to be gainned here as to how to answer the obnoxiouly overused question of WWJD? 4 stars (Laugh out loud, wet your pants funny!!) - If you want to read a book that will make you laugh until you cry, read 'Lamb'. This the book that will make you laugh so hard, that others around you will think your crazy. The subject matter is irreverant, but meant in fun. I really don't think anyone would be offended. Biff, is the loveable idiot friend of Jesus. And what an idiot he is! I love that guy. ...

A History of Modern Psychology with InfoTrac

4 stars (Adequate, yet not overbearing summation of modern psychology) - Schultz and Schultz offer a wonderful summation of the history of psychology. Many history of psychology texts are large and burdensome, but Schultz and Schultz sift out the waste and offer the facts. Interesting anecdotes about psychology's pioneers are offered, and the social climate surrounding the perspectives of each school of thought is also mentioned. All in all, this is a great book to have in the collection for the average historian of psychology. The authors, unfortunately, do present the information in a rather bland display. More color and layout effect would be useful and appealing. Furthermore, the chapter on the impact of women and minorities in psychology should not just be thrown on the end of the book ... it should be integrated throughout. Other than those two drawbacks, however, the book is wonderfully done. ...

Empires of the Word - A Language History of the World

5 stars ("The Tongue is a Sword" ) - This is a history of the rise and fall of languages from the time of the Sumerians to the present day. The author is fascinated with why some languages became more important and widely-spoken than others and the relationship of language to empire. He asserts quickly that history offers no pattern or pat solution to this question. Among the language histories that Ostler examines are the very-wide ranging Afro-Asiatic group, which encompasses Arabic, Aramaic, and Coptic among others, Turkish, Persian, Chinese, Sanskrit, Greek, and the major European languages. He focuses mostly on the literate Old World languages, although he has a chapter on Quechua and Nahuatl, the languages of the Incas and Aztecs respectively. As could be expected in a wide-ranging book, I found some chapters to be more interesting and informative than others. Scattered amongst the chapters are plenty of good maps and a large number of quotations and reproductions of inscriptions from a large number of languages. This is a well-produced book. I'll give this book the highest rating, but I must comment that I was a bit disappointed with the cautious conclusions of the author. One of his more interesting statements was that Arabic, an Afro-Asiatic language, became established only in "territories that had previously spoken an Afro-Asiatic language" That suggests that the conquest of one language over another may have something to do with the similarity in structure of the language -- or, in other words, English is not likely to supplant Chinese or the reverse. This point is not really developed to its fullest extent. Also, the section of the book I most look forward to was "What makes a language learnable?" but it is very brief. I would liked to have seen a lot more discussion of his point that "the essence of a language, its structure, can play a role in its viability." That's a dangerous and intriguing statement in that it implies that some lan...

The New Concise History of the Crusades- Revised Edition

4 stars (Insight in medieval history) - The New Concise History shows a good view on the Medieval 'madness' in which thoudands and thousands of people wandered through Europe, disorganised, plundering and pillaging, without the organisational powers of the former Roman armies driven by religious fanatism. It also gives insight into the current situation of the Middle East. Once the christian knights of Europe were not far from the Jihad warriors of today...Wruthless, without compassion, murdering anyone that had not the Christian faith. Especially the Jews of Germany had to endur in the start of the Crusads....In so far af very good and readable book. The author does not use any difficult language, myself being from Holland, and it gives a very good oversight and insight into Europe around the year 1000... 5 stars (GOOD WORK TO GET YOU STARTED ) - As other reviewers have pointed out, there are pros and cons to this particular work. I have some reservations myself, but overall, found the work good. This work does indeed give us a good, if somewhat brief, overview of the crusades. The author does present some ideas that are a bit different than than those that have been traditionally taught, and for the most part, unquestioned. This, in my opinion is a good thing as it makes us all think. On the other hand, I am not enough of an expert to be able to verify with any validity some of his statements. I do feel the author tried to be fare. On the other hand he tells us "research" is able to give us much more insight as to what was in the hearts and minds of men and women several centuries ago. I find this hard to beleave at times. I also felt the author sort of fluffed over and flitted through some pretty important aspects of the crusades. The act of completely obliterating city after city and the killing of hundreds of innocent people, really deserves more than one or two sentences. All in all, the work is a good survey and I feel it's greatest value is to spu...

The Red Tent

3 stars (Just okay for me) - I liked the idea of expanding on Dina's story. However, the content was sometimes a little to personal, at times gross, for me. I was also taken aback when I saw how much Diamante deviates from the actual text. This is not just an expansion of the story, but sometimes was outright false. A good story if not taken literally. 5 stars (Under a Wonderful Tent) - In terms of plot and charcter development, this book was wonderful. Based on charcters of the bible, the story explores the lives of the women in the bible which we never really got to know. Diamant has created a wonderful story about the women of biblical times, our fore-mothers Rebecca, Sarah, Rachel, and Leah, from Dinah's point of view. However, it is not any way offense to men. You need not be familiar with the bible to enjoy this book. If you are, you'll certainly recognize stories and characters from the old testament. Another work of fiction I might suggest that explores women and their stake in the Christian faith is John Mackowicz's The Last Martyr. With a similar theme, it portrays women in a positive light. 5 stars (A Terrrific Read) - This book is a story of Dinah, a character from the old testament that we know little about. It is the story of her life and her family in biblical times. There were things I didn't know about really, like the multiple wives and marrying close relatives. But it was in some ways very romantic, and sometimes heartbreaking. Dinah was a very strong woman. Also, I learned alot about what it was like for women when men were in charge of everything. But women were still a mystery to men, and what went on in the red tent was only for women to know. I really liked this book, it was hard for me to put it down once I started. ...

Short History of the Movies- A 9th Edition

5 stars (Extremely valuable) - My accidental encounter with an earlier edition of this book was the catalyst for my taking up film studies. The book is a clear, well written and systematically organized history of movies. It has a comprehensive and up to date bibliography and filmography. Chapters are chronological in sequence, but are organized around a particular theme. The authors introduce major influences in the cinema (whether directors, 'schools', actors or events), identify principal directors and films, and analyse major issues and advances. It is an excellent introduction to the history of movies and great jumping off point for further, more specialised study. It is refreshingly free from post-modernist jargon and abstractions. If you want a comprehensive introduction which is also a good read, I recommend this book most highly. 5 stars (Extremely valuable) - My accidental encounter with an earlier edition of this book was the catalyst for my taking up film studies. Fallen

4 stars (They're Only Human, After All) - " Fallen ", Daivd Maine's newest work of fiction, illuminates the reader with a powerful and in-depth interpretation of the Bible's account of the first family. He thoroughly explores the psychology of the emotions that drove Adam, Eve, Cain, and Abel, revealing them for what they are, the basis for all humankind. He begins the novel at "the end" and slowly unravels the mysteries behind their motives as each chapter progresses toward "the beginning." This book satisfies the curiosity of anyone who has ever wondered "why" with regards to the story of the first family of dysfunction and the original fall from grace. 5 stars (" Fallen " as sacred as the religious text from which this story is adapted) - David Maine's narration of the story of Cain and Abel in his latest masterpiece, " Fallen ", is perhaps as precious as the age-old biblical tale from which he draws inspiration. Once again, Maine revamps the seemingly familiar religious text into an accessible, heart-warming and witty account of two brothers struggling to understand each other. Captured in varying first-hand narratives, Adam, Eve, Cain and Abel offer individual perspectives about the value of love, sin, and one's inherent responsibility to God ultimately shedding a whole new light upon the Garden of Eden and the aftermath that ensues. ...

A History of Interior Design

5 stars (The Wonderful Mr. Pile) - History of Interior Design is great. I study interior design and, without John Pile's books, this wide-ranging subject would have been far more difficult. Studying the subject "history of interior design" would have been such a struggle for me without having this book at my side. I just couldn't find all I needed on the internet. Apart from the high quality paper and excellent images, John Pile has a writing style that gets his point across very clearly. That makes for rapid reading and faster absorption of information. ...

History of Interior Design and Furniture - From Ancient Egypt to Nineteenth-Century Europe

5 stars (Outstanding Book -Dont miss it) - This is an outstanding book, with plenty of pictures - great insider material on furniture and architecture. And I already have a design MA with my own firm. 2 stars (NOT SUCH GREAT BUY) - I AGREE WITH THE PREVIOUS TWO REVIEWERS, THIS BOOK IS GREAT ONLY IN THE WRITTEN INFORMATION, IN THE PICTORIALS IT IS INDEED SORELY LACKING. I HONESTLEY SAY THIS WITH FIRST HAND EXPERIENCE, BECAUSE I MYSELF AM CURRENTLY A DESIGN STUDENT, AND I HAD TO PURCHASE THIS BOOK FOR A MAJOR PART OF MY INTERIOR DESIGN EDUCATION. I RECOMMEND THAT THIS BE A BOOK THAT YOU CHECK OUT FROM THE LIBRARY FOR REFERENCE AND NOT ONE YOU PURCHASE. 2 stars (Underwhelming and overpriced) - The text of this volume is decent and well organized but in the area that most designers are interested in, visual examples, it is sorely lacking. A very minimal section of color photographs (which jump from Roman to the Renaissance. No sign of the Gothic)and a series of low contrast black and white ones are augmented with a series of uninspired drawings. All of this might still be helpful and useful were it not for the price. There are many volumes on furniture and decor that have come on the market recently which are superior in their content and priced more reasonably. ...

Courtyards- Aesthetic- Social- and Thermal Delight

1 stars (Honest Reviews?) - Were all the reviews written by the author? Give me a break! The fact that every review sounds the same will keep me from ever purchasing this book. In that case, I guess all the reviews helped! 5 stars (THE Book on Courtyards.) - Courtyards is a terrific book, the result of 20+ years of loving research. Oregon Professor John Reynolds is crazy for courtyards and it certainly shows. A courtyard is a space surrounded by a building, often surrounded by a house. There are all manner of courtyards, large, small, huge, quiet, loud. Some are open and others are terribly private. But all good courtyards have things in common. In the landscapes most of us in the US are used to, we have a house and the gardens are on the outside and we see them before we see the house. In a sense these landscapes serve mostly as dressing to enhance the outward look of the house. But a fine courtyard garden is different. It is smack in the middle of the house and the house surrounds it. It is not wide open to the world, but instead is a place to get away from it all, a place to be outside, but not to be out in the open. The best courtyards are open to the sky, have water, vines, a multitude of interesting flowers, trees, potted plants. A large number of the very finest courtyard plants are discussed in detail in this excellent book. I was struck by how interesting the numerous photos and designs were. Profusely illustrated, each one serves a definitive purpose. I was struck too, by how many different things go into the making of a well thought out courtyard. What is involved so that it will be warm in the winter and cool in the hot summer. What is involved so that it becomes a place where people want to be. I took many notes as I read this large book and some day I plan to build a house of my own design, and in the middle of it, I'm going to have a courtyard. And in this courtyard, I'll have all the things needed, the ingredients so carefully detailed here, that ma...

A Short History of Nearly Everything

5 stars (Makes you feel smart) - Any author who can summarize the history of "nearly everything" in such an entertaining manner is truly a great writer. Bryson makes science understandable and actually succeeds in making the reader feel smart. You find yourself laughing out loud at the antidotes he offers up about great men with great ideas. This is a must for any home library. 5 stars (great audio book) - I bought the orginal abridged audio book and liked it so much that I purchased the unabridged version. 17 hours of Bryson! 5 stars (Short History but comprehensive) - Bill Bryson's Short History is a highly informative account of the history of science which manages to be both engaging and entertaining. It is impressive for the quantity of historical detail it includes and for the narrative style which includes anecdotal material which helps the reader to want to read more. It describes scientific concepts in highly accessible terms for the layperson which adds enjoyment to the reading of his account. ...

Central Park- An American Masterpiece- A Comprehensive History of the Nation-s First Urban Park

5 stars (A Gorgeous Book Commemorating America's 1st Public Park) - Commemorating the 150th anniversary of Central Park, photographer and historian Sara Cedar Miller celebrates the aesthetic, cultural and historic significance of America's first public park with the book "Central Park, An American Masterpiece." This is the park's definitive illustrated history, and offers some of the most gorgeous photographs I have seen on the subject - a difficult task given the number of pictures that have been drawn, painted and photographed of the Manhattan landmark. The book includes over 200 color illustrations, original plans and drawings alongside modern photos, giving the viewer/reader an historical perspective. Accompanying Ms. Miller's work, portraying the park throughout the seasons, is a well written text which highlights the conception and creation of the park and its art and architecture. This is a big, beautiful picture book that would make a wonderful addition to any home or library. It's a wonderful gift idea. I know as I have given it numerous times. Ms. Miller is the parks official historian and photographer and has been since the mid-1980s. JANA 5 stars (A book as worthy as the park it celebrates) - Sara Miller has put together an outstanding book: a book as vast and detailed as the Great Park itself. For those not familiar with the park and its history, this is an invaluable introduction to the political, demographical, economic and, especially, aesthetic thinking that went into the creation of 800 acres of gorgeous park space in the middle of Manhattan. For those seasoned veterans of NYC history, this is a welcome reminder of the enormous vision and efforts of Calvert Vaux and Fredrick Law Olmsted, as they conceived the park. Nota Bene: A lot of books have gorgeous photos but the print job is miserable ... Others have high-qualtity prints but the photos aren't that interesting ... This book has glorious prints and an expert print job. Pick up this book. Rocco...

ESPN College Football Encyclopedia - The Complete History of the Game

4 stars (Best of its kind, but watch out for all the flaws) - This is the best college information resource I have seen. It has always been difficult to find an ACCURATE source of college football scores; this comes closer to that goal than many others' previous attempts. The year by year poll information is particularly helpful. The essays are interesting, and the brief summary information on each of the schools is very good. But I have found too many nitpicky errors to be entirely satisfied. One problem is the lack of "key" information, which makes deciphering a lot of information difficult. What does "RB" mean in the final polls? I THINK it refers to the R Billingsley poll, but the book is silent. I know some of the key information on Southern California's list of games is wrong--USC never played in Pendleton or Albany, Oregon, and the Key fails to explain that the neutral site reference to "FIE" means Fiesta Park in Los Angeles. And lots of neutral sites are not listed at all. I have not "audited" the book to see if all the scores are accurate, but the amount of errors here and there causes concern. But, this is a must book for the serious college football researcher, with enough "prose" info to be of interest to the casual fan. 3 stars (Great resource, but not without faults) - I'd really echo what the first reviewer wrote, that this is a valuable book hurt by some poor editing. And since this publication is meant to be a complete and authoritative source for college football, those mistakes detract from its overall value. The capsule looks at each program are great. Not only can you look back at scores and performance from past years, but the leaders for each team are a useful resource. It's fun to look at certain schools, to see how their fortunes have risen and fallen over long periods of time. The historical polls are also enjoyable to look at, for much the same reason, seeing which teams have stuck around near the top for long periods of ti...
