5 stars (How I learned physics) - This book saved me in my first physics class. Working through the example problems really helped me when the teacher was obtuse. Most of basic physics that I know now I learned from this text. I found it slow reading, but what engineering/physics text is not? If you're looking to be spoon-fed the Understanding of Physics, then this book is not it. If you're looking to do well in class, then this book is worth the time and effort. My high regard for this book is biased by my abysmally low regard for the "teacher" who taught me less physics ideas than I can count with one hand of fingers. But when it's 1 am in the morning, you have a physics test in 9 hours, and you can only have one text, this is definitely it. 2 stars (Overrated) - The book is very overrated. It is obtuse and most of the problems are completely unsolvable based on the information and examples given. It is grossly overpriced. This book is worth maybe $50, and that is pushing it. I get good grades in physics, but not because of this book. If it wasn't for my fantastic instructor, this series of courses would be a total nightmare. The chapters dealing with force, energy, torque, momentum, and angular momentum are among the worst that I have gone through. The optics section is also pretty weak. I did like the chapter on gravitational force(13). There are too many textbooks out there that assume that the reader already knows the subject, as hard as it is too believe, math books are notorious for it. This book is yet another one. 1 stars (Irritating) - I am not an idiot. Far from it. However, I can't understand the glowing praise I see this book receiving. As I am currently working through this text, I may be a bit closer to home than those who have completed the task. I am seriously less than fond of this book. There doesn't seem to be enough background in the material to handle the problems. This is most noticeable in the middle chapters. Ther... 5 stars (the best of the best!!!) - It's one of the best knitting books I have ever seen, I also own Knitting on the edge (a great book also)but this second volume is greater. Who said that seconds don't work? This volume proves there wrong. If you're a knitting fanatic like me, buy this book, you wont regreated. 5 stars (A unique and worthwhile collection) - Anyone hesitating if Nicky Epstein's second book on knitting borders is worthwhile - worry no more. As her personal intro says, "...completely new...", it is a wonderfully fresh, new addition to her first collection. And, there are many of these new edgings - this is not a skinny, part 2 type of follow up book. The format of the book is the same - clear concise swatch photos, wonderful use of yarns to highlight stitches, and a larger section on color knitting. You will be able to customize your knitting w. ease since the edging patterns details are clear and concise. The author gives a wonderful intro on texture and size as a jump start point for you. The edgings are organized in logical style categories w. a fresh idea of one, "Noveau" added - it stays true to its title. As in the first book, patterns highlighting her new edgings are included. The patterns are like palettes for her fantastc new collection of edgings. This one is a keeper, for sure! ... 5 stars (Most realistic) - Really enjoy this program. Work in a Casino. This has the most realistic approach to the games. Like the lobby to change the game to play. Moving from one machine to another. 4 stars (Lots of Fun and Bonus Games All Around) - Short of being able to duplicate the real thing, this is most satisfying and fun to play. Only complaint I would put forward would be that you win way more often than you would in reality. Otherwise, the bonus games are varied and even occasionally challenging. 5 stars (Absolutely addictive) - I love all Phantom slots but this is the best yet. They just get better all the time, and if you visit their website (PhantomEFX.com) message boards you'll see why. Someone from support is on there all the time trying to make things better for their customers. Even to the point of changing an upcoming game from 9 lines to 20 lines because that's what their regulars wanted! They have a new line of slots coming out in August, and they're promising to be even better--but I don't think you can go wrong with either Nickels & More or Nickel Alley. ... 4 stars (A good tool, but with one serious flaw..) - The workouts and the book overall are good, and for the self-coached athlete, much better than trying to think up a workout every day. There are two main sets for each workout, one longer than the other, but they could use more differentiation - one may be 2600 meters and the other 2300 meters. It should be more like 2600 and 1900. Or slip a third option in the middle. Of course, if you are reasonably experienced, it's not had to extrapolate whatever distance you plan to do for the day. But....the flaw...once you get it wet, it's nearly impossible to get it dry again! The pages are waterproof, but they stick together and even a little splash seems to get every page wet. Unless you stand it up and open as many pages as you can, rotating this every couple hours for several days, you just can't get it dry before it starts to mildew and stink. I evn tried putting it in the dryer (on that removable non-rotating shelf) but unless you get those pages open, it won't dry. Two solutions I've found- (1) take off the spiral binding, hole punch the pages (not easy, since the pages are plastic), but it into a binder, and just take a single page for the day's workout to the pool, or (2) keep the whole thing in a big ziploc bag, turning to the page you want first, then zipping it in for the pool. This work pretty well, and keeps you from owning "Stinky Workouts in a Binder". 3 stars (Try The Waterproof Coach) - This book appears to be similar to the Waterproof Coach: The Waterproof Workout Book for Fitness Swimmers and Triathletes published several years ago. The Waterproof Coach has more versatility because it's interior workout pages can be rearranged to create thousands of combinations of workouts. 5 stars (I can't wait to get in the pool again!) - Swim Workouts in a Binder for Triathletes is my new "Most Valuable Tool" for training this season. Bernhardt begins the book by making a concise case for sound, purposefu... 1 stars (hypocrisy) - The author is a whole host of contradictions. While he rails against the ethics of sports agents, he himself embarassingly participates in questionable activities to add to his sports roster. The book is a boring read, and after awhile his "holier than thou" attitude begins to grate on you. 5 stars (Informative look into the lives of baseball agents.) - Review: License to Deal by Jerry Crasnick License to Deal by Jerry Crasnick is sub-titled "A Season on the Run with a Maverick Baseball Agent". The agent is Matt Sosnick, whose most famous client is Dontrelle Willis of the Florida Marlins. Crasnick paints Sosnick and his partner Paul Cobbe as good people and friends to their clients. All this in a field of sharks and wolves. Sosnick and Cobbe routinely try to keep their own clients from abandoning and jumping to other agents while the players are still in the minors or just starting out their careers in the majors. Crasnick makes Sosnick look like the victim. But as Crasnick shows (although he never explicitly states it), Sosnick-Cobbe have their own moments where they are rude, arrogant, aggressive and steal other agents' clients as well. The bottom line is this is a cut throat business and either all agents are victims or none of them are, because they all get screwed and all try to screw others too. Crasnick also writes about other agents and baseball deals in the book. There is a whole chapter on Scott Boras, as well as many other anecdotes and quotes from other agents and baseball management interspersed throughout the book. Overall, Crasnick does a good job describing the life of agents. The middle-tier ones like Sosnick and Cobbe and the stars like Boras and Moorad (now in management with the Diamondbacks). I recommend this book for those that are interested in the business side of baseball. 5 stars (Sports Book of the Year) - Without question, this will go down as the best sports book of 2005. 5 stars (Reveals the behaviour of a typical fanatic soccer fan!) - All Arsenal soccer fans should read this book by Nick Hornby. It shows his obsessions for Arsenal with a fine sense of homour and wit. It is filled with RAW honesty which will definately increase the male hormones of the British working class-soccer fans. Hornby also shows his passion for the ups and downs of the typical fan of Arsenal. His emotional outbursts are extreme (to say the least) and would leave the reader laughing on the floor. A MUST read! 3 stars (Not bad, but never engaged me) - I like Nick Hornby and I'm an Arsenal fan, so I should have loved this book...but I didn't. Maybe I'm just not a fan of memoirs, or maybe a memoirist has to have a more interesting life than Hornby's, but I was just never caught up in this book. I was never wondering what was going to happen, never wondering how things were going to work out. If I hadn't been an Arsenal fan, I probably would have put this down one day and never picked it up again, not because it's bad but because it's forgettable. It just meanders from one random, wry musing to another. A word of warning: if you don't know anything about English soccer, you might have a hard time following this book. Do words like "Anfield" and "Gazza" ring any bells? If not, you're not part of the target audience, and it could be tough going. 5 stars (Oi! A Confessional of Passion and Frenzy by Hornby) - FEVER PITCH is basically a tribute to English football. Hornby (as a real-life Arsenal fan) has a unique talent here in weaving a story out of autobiographical moments with a slight narrative where the glory and obsessive nature of football is eeked out on every page. Within this you can quickly deduce that the thing always and forever on a football fan's mind is HIS fixture list and everything else (friends, family, love and moments) is second best. Each year, each month, each season of the narrator's life can be calculated and described by footballing m... 3 stars (Good book on golf but not a manual on golf swing) - If you are looking for a good book on golf in general, this may fit your bill. If you are looking for specific tips on the golf swing, you may be disappointed. There are some thoughts on the swing, but not as much as you would expect from a book that has got so many great reviews. I suppose this is the kind of book that you will re-read and appreciate more and more over the years. From the book, you will get a feel for how good a teacher Penick was and how a coach should tailor his teachings according to the student. All those who never had the opportunity to learn from a great teacher but wanted to have a second-hand experience at least through his book, may come away a little disappointed since this is not a substitute for a lesson. 4 stars (Great Tips, not for someone looking for swing fundamentals) - I enjoyed the book, it had some great tips. But it's not for a beginner looking for swing fundamentals, instead try Ben Hogan's 5 lessons. Still worth reading though. 5 stars (A Common-Sense Classic) - This little collection of wisdom from Harvey Penick has become the best selling sports book of all time. Which just goes to show you, when it comes to golf instruction, less really is more. Penick proves you don't need stop-action photography and a lot of technical nonsense to have a great golf book. His simple observations are far more valuable. Even when Penick is addressing a complex mechanical issue, such as the position of the right elbow, he uses language and images that everyone can understand. His entire approach to the mental game is summed up in two pages on "positive thinking," and his advice on putting is priceless. So if you feel like you're getting overloaded with too much information, put everything else away and pick up the little red book. ...
