5 stars (Mother-Daughter Wisdom) - I just got my book and have started reading it. Its great. I had seen Christiane Northrup on tv and she is great. She makes you think...."why didn't I think of that-its so simple" 1 stars (Cliches, platitudes and old chestnuts) - As mother of two teenagers, I had high hopes for this book, but I almost gagged on the number of trite sayings this author can cram into a paragraph. You will find "great" insights like: mothers are very important in an infant's life, two year olds are announcing their independence, and it's important to keep channels of communication open with your daughter even when things aren't going smoothly. And I paid how much money to learn THAT?? If you have had your eyes and ears open for any length of time, you will find nothing new in this book. It is all hype and marketing with no substance. And wisdom? That's the biggest hype of all. Save your money and just go talk to your daughter. 5 stars (Wow! Awesome Book! Mothers of Daughters: Get This Book!) - First off, this book makes a great gift to anyone you know who has a daughter regardless of age. It makes a great baby shower gift, also. I just want to start by saying, I first saw this book and I skimmed through it, but didn't buy it. I was very skeptical. I am a well read individual and I was thinking: "I don't need another lame self help book by some would be expert that sits on my shelf that I never read. My daughter's five: there is a bunch of birth, pregnancy stuff in the book. I am past those stages and don't need a book that covers stuff I don't need." However, I ended up going back and getting the book. I am SO glad I did. Now I am here to say: this book is amazing. Reading the book made me want to read all of her books. I took so many notes and have already started using some of what she wrote. For those of you who consider yourself Moms who care about being good Moms, this book is a great compass for how to raise your daughters well. It ... 5 stars (An unbelievably touching book) - I originally bought this book for the sole reason that Marian and i were childhood friends who grew up on the same street together in Staten Island. I knew of Dave's death shortly after 9/11 and kept Marian and her family in my thoughts daily. I knew Marian was gifted but was totally unprepared for how much this book would touch me and change my life. I now view the people i love in a different way. Her book was beautiful and so well written. I felt like i can somewhat understand what all of these brave people went through both firefighters and their families, in the wake of 9/11. 5 stars (More than a Memoir) - To be honest, I am generally not a fan of memoirs of this type. I mean yes this is a woman who suffered a profound tragedy but does this mean she can write? Well, after devouring it's nearly 450 pages in a couple of sittings, I think it can be said, that Marian Fontana is a writer. A damn good one. She deserves not only to have her story told but to tell it herself. This is both an honest and humorous look at the grieving process as well as a fascinating piece of history. Fontana's account of how she and her some of her fellow widows organized and stood up not only for 911 victims and their families, but for firemen themselves, gives us an inside look at just how these men who perform the most dangerous and lauded of work, are basically treated like crap. There is something very special about this book and just how close it puts you to the incredilby profound grief that enveloped Ms. Fontana's life. Yet, I never really felt sorry for her because I don't think she allows the reader to do that. She is a strong person yet she admits her flaws, thus making her even stronger. This is a must read for anyone interested in 9-11 as well as anyone interested in grief, love and loss. 5 stars (Sharply observed and moving) - One of the memorable images seared into the world's consciousness on September 11, 2001 was ... 5 stars (Updated information AND layout makes a healthy book) - This book is by far the best ever. It is the first edition of OBOS which I feel really addresses the equally pressing healthcare needs of myself and younger generations of women. I had used prior versions of this book, but still had felt that the authors of those versions assumed that the readers had been with them through the 1970's...etc. The tone of this book is very inclusive and non-presuming. Consequently the medical information presented does not get lost in the personal vingettes. Our own generational experiences are just as important. Also, the authors take an enligthened approach to sexuality instead of segmenting off "LGBT/queer" issues into a couple of areas. This book is further commendable because it made more of an effort to tell the stories (and thus provide culturally sensitive health care) for different women. Kudos to the people who suggested a redesign and updating of the book layout. 5 stars (A must have!) - Especially in a culture as embarrassed to talk about anything sexual, this book is a great resource for everyone. Information as open and educated gets harder and harder to find in today's political environment, and this book has it all. No home should be without it! 1 stars (very political) - While I understand the possibility of political opinions surfacing in books, what was supposed to be a helpful guide for women of all ages is in reality a campaign for pro-choice and many other liberal stances. The book goes so far as to state that those that are pro-life "have created an atmosphere that is stigmatizing, threatening, and too often violent." While there have been cases of violence that the great majority of us do not condone, I find it very offensive that this opinion about us causing trouble that apparently isn't warranted is stated as a fact. Also included are various opinions about how religion has caused problems for teenagers especially, stifling them in the... 4 stars (Very informative) - Great book. It is well written and explains a great deal about my body. 4 stars (What I thought I already knew...) - This book taught me things that I thought I already knew... boy, was I wrong! It helped me understand my cycle and helped my husband and I with our "family planning" more than what I ever thought it would! I am not a "reader" - I don't like read books because I get bored with them... but this book was different! It held my interest very easily - before I knew it I had read the entire thing! 5 stars (The Best Nursing Book You Can Buy) - I discovered this book two months into breastfeeding, and wished I had found it sooner. Everything you possibly need to know about nursing is under one cover. Unlike most other breastfeeding books that only discuss nursing a newborn, this book contains information on nursing newborns through toddlers. Highly recommend this book for all nursing mothers. 5 stars (Excellent nursing book!) - I bought this book as I am expecting my second baby and had problems nursing the first. I went through at least half a dozen lactation consultants with my first before I got the info I needed to make breastfeeding successful, and this was after the first two weeks and after my baby was hospitalized due to dehydration. I wish I had this book then, as it covers everything I needed to know about poor latch/insufficient milk supply. I am learning so much as I read the book and feel so much more confident as I approach the birth of my second. This book covers every issue I think you could come across with breastfeeding. 5 stars (Lots of good info) - Great book. Actually answered some questions (one in particular) for which I'd been unable to find answers elsewhere. Including at the Medela booth at a professional conference. 5 stars (The Return of Orthodox Catholicism) - This is an exciting, well written book, something that I was not expecting at all. I began watching and contributing to EWTN during a difficult period of my life and Mother Angelica's network is a blessing to all, but especially those who are going through hard times. This book is a terrific read about how it all came about and it spends a lot of time on her battles with certain members of the American Church hierarchy - many of whom were exposed in the 2002 sex scandals for their less-than-Catholic actions and unconscionable lack of leadership. Mother Angelica is the primary figure in the ongoing renaissance of orthodox Catholicism among the laity and, equally important, in the seminaries. Mother Angelica and EWTN are providing wonderful tools for taking back our Church from what Raymond Arroyo (charitably) calls the "progressives" in the USCCB and their bureaucracies. What a wonderful book! It makes me ready to join the fight! 5 stars (BUY THIS BOOK) - This is one of the most exciting, well written biographies to come out in a very long time. Its about an underprivileged woman who became a cloistered nun and changed the world. Mother Angelica is a woman who somehow balanced real orthodoxy with brilliant management vision and skill without what seems any worldly qualifications whatsoever. Moreover, here's is a story of overcoming great suffering -- both physical and emotional -- and allowing God to transform her life without ever looking back or counting the cost. (It's worth noting too this is no saccharine sweet nun's story, to be sure!) This wonderful biography really shows us she is "The Patron Saint of CEOs" -- and patron of anyone else who by God's grace, must overcome a legion of what seem like insurmountable problems. Mother Angelica's life turns our natural aversion to personal suffering on its head and makes clear that miracles really do happen. --Enjoy. M. Hart Volant, PA 4 stars (A Dangerous Book) - ... 4 stars (The Real Truth) - I think this is a good book for those people who are willing to take a deep look at themselves. I didn't agree with everything in the book, but many of the points that were made were eye openers. It might help, as well, for the less scholarly reader to have the workbook because a list of relevant scriptures aren't as readily available in the book. 3 stars (Almost great) - When I saw a book called "lies women believe" I thought my prayers had been answered! This book would have been ideal if they had left it at that but they had to go and spoil it with the nonsense about the truth that sets them free. A shame. 4 stars (Potentially Life Changing Book) - I had been a longtime listener to Nancy Leigh DeMoss's radio series (Revive our Hearts) on WAVA in the DC area and I finally picked up this book after hearing her talk about it for a long time. I loved the simple language and her forthrightness in going right to the heart of many of the 'lies' we believe today. And this book really hit home for me. I had known for some time that as Christians we are called to follow a different path than those who would live exclusively in the world and follow worldly ways. But no one before had ever specifically come out and said "When you buy into the American consumerist mentality that more things will make you happy, that is Satan speaking! That is a lie -- that you can find fulfillment in things! Only God's grace is sufficient for you! Christ alone can make you happy and to some degree, you will always feel unfulfilled until that day that you come home to His heavenly kingdom. Only there will you feel completely fulfilled." I absolutely LOVED the literary device that she used throughout the book. She starts each chapter with a letter from Eve to her friends, talking about the difficulties she has encountered since being thrown out of the garden of eden -- the difficulties with the children, the difficulties with her husband, her feelings of ... 1 stars (Five Minutes to Orgasm Every Time You Make Love - etc) - It seemed that it took a long time to get to the point - it drug out - maybe to make the book longer. The information was stated in a what I feel was a vulgar way to say things and there is no evidence of any morality whatso ever. As soon as I finished it it went into the waste basket. 5 stars (Useful Book with a Contemporary Viewpoint) - What I liked best about this book is that it treats women as if their bodies will react in predictable ways if the right buttons are pushed, and the author doesn't leave pushing the correct buttons solely up to the man. Why indeed, are women so varied in plumbing and psychology that many have dificulty achieving orgasm at all and yet almost all men achieve orgasm quite easily (at least while young)? Answer - they are NOT! Women are entitled to achieve orgasms just like men. You don't have to feel self-conscious. Just learn to face sex without fear and with a new measure of confidence you can learn with this book. 4 stars (Excellent Book ) - This can be a real challenge for some women, and also for some men who love women. In that respect, I think this book is a very good basic manual on the subject of orgasm and satisfaction, allowing both men and women to gain more of a grasp on the subject of female orgasm. There are some other books which are also excellent, most obviously being Tom Leonardi's "SECRETS OF SENSUAL LOVEMAKING" which provides a very masculine step-by-step plan or "system" for bringing a woman to what the author calls The Ultimate Orgasm, which involves the g-spot and the controversial mystical Female Ejaculating Orgasm. Contrast that with 5 MINUTES TO ORGASM EVERY TIME's guidance toward the Clitoral variety. With the help of Leonardi's book and a caring man, I have come to be a great enjoyer of Both now. Then there are some videos or DVDs wich are excellent for both men and women who enjoy watching a demonstration of techniques in act... 4 stars (Second-hand Review) - I did not read this myself, but I sent it to my friend who's husband (my best friend of about 12 years) is in Iraq. She said it gave her a good cry and made her feel a better, which the latter part is what I was going for. So from her review to me, I would recommend it. 4 stars (Can't Wait for More.) - Chicken Soup for the Soul books just get better and better. 5 stars (Brilliant, Insightful.) - For this reader, the most insightful message in the book was the view of behavior (and mental illness) as lying on a continuum. Many of us do not fit the "norm" on the bell curve, yet we continue to thrive and produce in spite of or because of our differences. 5 stars (An Amazing Book) - Having a bipolar disorder is not easy for either the person that has it, or people that are close to that person Kay Jamison took a chance and wrote about her own disorder, without knowing the consequences of what might happen to her job. She did it so others might understand and appreciate what it is like to deal with. I am a professional woman, and considered successful by those who know me. However, it is always a battle, even with medication, to deal with. I have never known what "normal" felt like. I read her book and finally found a kindred spirit, even though I have never had the opportunity to meet her. I have given this book to my husband, my parents and friends. It has helped them, as well as me. I highly recommend it. 5 stars (An Unquiet Mind: A Memoir of Moods and Madness) - This is a moving account of the author's experience with bipolar disease (or as she prefers, manic-depressive illness). Though Jamison has co-written "the" textbook on the subject, this book is written for lay people, and in that regard is very readable -- no technical jargon -- and full of information that helps one understand the condition. ... 4 stars (A real tool for attaining health and fitness for life) - Body for Life for Women should be considered an essential guide for women's preventive heath. Because it is focused specifically on the unique health and fitness needs and problems encountered by women, it is much more valuable for women than general health or diet texts. While it promotes a plan of "12 weeks to a fabulous body"; to see it as a mere diet or fitness book sells short its real value. A diet book may help us (temporarily) lose a few pounds; this book aims to show us how to create a healthy body in which we can live independently throughout our lives. As a spokesperson on health, Dr. Peeke is the real thing. She is an expert on the most current understanding of nutrition, preventive health and women's issues. The book is well written, inspiring and accessible. It gives women, especially those of us over 40, real hope and guidance as we wonder why "what we have always done" to stay fit is not working any more. I found especially interesting the section on life milestones, which describes a woman's health priorities at each stage of life. The mind principles, which urge us to examine the attitudes that shape our behavior, are a wake-up call. Dr. Peeke is a big fan of the Nike slogan "Just Do It". In this book, she tells us exactly what it is that we must just do and provides the tools and motivation to keep doing it. 5 stars (You won't believe it!) - I have completed my 12 week program and am astounded by the results. I'm 53 and a dancer but I never thought my body would return to this level of fitness. Thank you, thank you, thank you. I don't intend to stop my regimen because I feel so good and the weight keeps coming off. I've already added almost six pounds to my muscle mass and my fat percentage is now 23.8%. 3 stars (I wanted to love this book, but...) - ...I got so weary of the incessant complaining about the current government administration. I would've rather she filled those pages with more stuff about her family, her mom, her son. But every time she turned around she was complaining about the government. It was the same kind of thing that really hurt Tony Hendra's "Father Joe" in my opinion, but here it's much more damaging to the flow of the book. Once I "kinda" got past that it was a great read, but not nearly as memorable as her previous memoir, "Traveling Mercies." Worth a read if you love Annie's writing, and I do, but probably to be missed otherwise. 4 stars (For Lamott Readers, But Certainly NOT For Bush Fans) - Anne Lamott is a writer's writer. And what I mean by that is that she writes on a level most writers would LOVE to make it to. She's easy to read while, at the same time, having a deep message, and a raucous sense of humor. I got hooked on her years ago when I read BIRD BY BIRD, a book that I still refer to often whenever I need to "get real" about my own writing life. I was pleased to learn that these are short memoirs of her life, a collection of short stories. The short story form seems to be making a modest comeback, and I loved the fact that a collection of them made it to the New York Times' list, too. But lets get into the meat and potatoes of the book now ... This is a look at Ms. Lamott's life through her own eyes, and she wears everything on her sleeve, including her disdain for the Bush administration, her dislike of young children, her poor motherhood skills, and her struggles with faith. Examples ... Lamott has to deal with the death of her Alzheimer's mother, pulling the urn that contains her mother's ashes out of her closet. And as she does, she reminisces about the final months of her mother's life: "Her purse was a weight, ballast; it tethered her to the earth as her mind floated away.
