5 stars (More like Halo than Doom.) - Doom 3 is my favorite FPS of all time, due to the atmosphere and total immersion. Quake is nothing like this. Half Life 2 was good if you like long stretches of boredom with small spurts of easy combat. Quake is better than this. While I had hoped Quake 4 would be based on the original Quake, a game which was the Doom 3 of its time as far as scary atmosphere, and the Counterstrike of its time as far as multiplayer, Quake 2 served as a suitable base for the game. Quake is an action game, pure and simple. It is very immersive in the war against the Strogg, and reminds me a lot of a more adult, mature, and bloody halo. Lots of Baddies, great vehicles, linear, and even better weapons. The storyline is good enough, with some twists here and there. People love to whine about the AI, well you dont need good AI when you have like 5 ppl attacking at once from different directions. Whats the point? Your squadmates have the best AI I've ever seen. Graphics are unbelievable if you have a good system, but there is no darkness to hide the flaws if you have a mediocre system. Doom 3 runs much better than Quake. Multiplayer is a quake 3 clone + lag, dont buy it for that. Half life 2's engine is so much better for multiplayer. So if you like an overrated doom 3 clone system hog with japanese-style horror over the red white and blue gore of ID software, buy F.E.A.R. If you like non linear games, buy Far Cry. If you like boring puzzle games that mix shooting with Tetris, but Half Life 2. And if you like Halo style action + a hard edge, buy Quake 4 . 4 stars (Not to be compared to Doom 3. An amazing game from the masters.) - First off let me say that I'm very, very tired of people who trash a game like this for a few reasons: 1.) they focus too much on graphics, 2.) they compare it to similar games which have a different focus, and 3.) they show no reverence for the people who paved the way for one of the best genres in the business. 5 stars (Now get your lazy butt to Mars, Space Marine!) - This review is both for the X-BOX as well as the PC-version of the game: You got a weekend coming up? You got some time on your hands? You got a grand supply of Coke and pizza? You got a craving for good horror movies and games? You know how to turn off the lights and turn on your computer/X-BOX? And finally: you got a computer that can actually run this game fast enough (no need to worry here if you have an X-BOX)? Well, then what are you waiting for: get DOOM 3 to have the greatest thrill and chill ride of your life! Doom 3 is something like TOTAL RECALL (remember Arnold, the Governator, back in his glory days on his mission to Mars?) meets DOOM meets HALF-LIFE meets SYSTEM SHOCK 2. From the get-go this game simply grips you with its eerie dark atmosphere. And this is the plot: You are a space-marine who just got assigned to a top secret research facility on Mars - very much like an Area 51 in outer space. As soon as you leave the ship and enter the hangar you'll be exploring the base. This part of the game works very much like Half-Life. In a creepy "calm before the storm"-fashion you get to navigate the dark corridors, offices, underground machinery and even the cantina and restrooms. Even though you can't exactly tell what's wrong - you get the feeling that something badly out of whack. Some people (you may choose to talk to) seem to be on the edge. A TV blurs about recent happenings. Data-units and screens give you access to information about Mars, the base, the staff etc. You may even listen in to conversations when you're passing by some people. The level of interactivity is amazing and the claustrophobic spooky tone won't let you go until the very end of this game. There's lots of scripted events as well, which are all well done and do not interrupt the flow and overall experience, at all. Soon you're given a PDA (That's "Geek" for: Personal Data Assistant), which allows you to collect access... Activision :: Shooters (Shooter) :: Action :: Computer Games :: :: Doom 3
3 stars (Yeah, the graphics are nice but its not that fun....) - Unless you cheat like a Cacodemon, otherwise you get killed quick. This expansion pack takes the award for the Fastest Killing of a Player, less than 3 minutes. The only game that is as bad is the first Aliens Vs. Predator game. I bought this dark game at the discount bin of my local game store, thinking that it would be more interesting (or fun) than the original game (which I played all the way to the end, cheat-cheat-cheat). I was expecting something like a more intense version of Serious Sam but it plays alot like Resident Evil. In contrast, Half-Life 2 was alot more fun to play - despite its Police-State registration process. Doom 3 needs to be more fun and less Funhouse. 5 stars (Better than the original) - This game is 10x better than the game it came with. Get this game and you will experience doom! The level designs are more interesting and frightening. The action is faster and makes you think quick. Much Much better than regular doom3. 4 stars (A Step Up for DOOM 3) - Better overall. Smooth install. Better weapons. The Artifact is fun to use. Faster and more variable levels. Just when it starts to get too tedious (and it does), some element of the game significantly changes and it's more fun again. Only a few problems to solve during the game. There was nothing particularly amusing about this game, no real levity, and I never really felt like my monster fighting skills were improving from level to level. Neat graphics though, claustrophobic environment, better blasting satisfaction, but for me...no real immersion. For a WORLD GONE MAD, goofy and imaginative, visually very interesting, often really creepy, a "how the hell am I supposed to do that", blast 'em to pieces, WHOA kinda game.... PAINKILLER :) ... 4 stars (Great Word Game) - Bookworm Deluxe is a game set in a library, and features a grid of tan colored Scrabble-like tiles. The object is to click on adjacent letters in order to form words that can be "chomped" by the bookworm. While this may sound easy, there's a twist: burning tiles are added to the board. If you don't use these burning tiles before they hit bottom, the whole library burns down! (Game over, in other words.) You score points based on the length of each word, the scarcity of letters in the word, whether or not there are any reward tiles in the word, and what level of the game you're on. Green tiles appear randomly and, if used, increase the word score. If you make words using 5 or more letters, you earn a gold tile. Use the gold tile and you earn even MORE points! Below the Bookworm is a bonus word; if you make this word, you get a hefty bonus! Sound too tame to you? Well, in addition to the Classic Game, you can choose the Action Game option. In Action Game mode, burning tiles are dropped into the grid at an alarming pace--and will burn through the letters whether you make a move or not! Players earn whimsical titles such as Scribe, Librarian and Editor. You can quit the game and resume it at your leisure. There is also a Hall of Fame which records Top Scores, Best Words (those earning the most points) and Longest Words. For example, I earned 2520 for spelling "nougat", which is my personal best point-wise. This is a great word game, but a word of caution: when I bought this game for Windows XP, the screen said that I only had a 6 minute demo. I'm like "What?!" So I emailed the company and it turns out that you'll need a universal patch in order to "unlock" the game. (If you need the patch, it's http://beta.popcap.com/pubfiles/PopCDFix.exe) This is a shame, in my opinion, because an individual who is not web-savvy may be clueless as to how to get the game to work--and may give up altogether. Not only that, some individuals buy games t... Activision :: bookworm :: deluxe :: activision :: home :: education :: kids :: parenting :: bookwormdeluxe- 23 may :: 2005 :: Bookworm Deluxe-
3 stars (Deja Vu) - Pros- The free roaming is quite good, The bert slide is a fun addition, Slightly improved graphics, Classic Mode, (If you've played the other 6 (like me), you're gonna buy it simply because it's more challenges to do) Cons- No edit tricks option in story mode, NO EDIT TRICKS OPTION IN STORY MODE, A bit same old, The embarrassingly bad Jackass- style humour, Still no replays, Having to go to shops to get stat challenges, Long bland corridors connecting the areas slightly diminishes the "whole city with no loading times" effect, Easier than previous games on Sick Mode, oh yeah and NO EDIT TRICKS OPTION IN STORY MODE- what a ridiculous oversight 4 stars (Pretty Good) - Even though you can tell the makers of this game rushed to get it out on time, without checking all the bugs. I have to say that i really enjoyed this game. I have only rented it, but it was sooo fun. I love these kind of games though, the kind that make you think real fast on what you should do next. If you've liked the THUG series i know for a fact that you will enjoy this. I like the new NO LOADING SCREENS thing too, it's alot more fun. THUG 2 blowed, but this game makes up for it! 3 stars (An OK game, but way too many defects) - I'm glad on renting this game for money's sake. It isn't worth past 35 bucks. This game is fun, but with way too many things messed up. These things include the diffculty, in which they expect you to pull off a 10,000 point combo as the 2nd or 3rd mission. This is especially difficult to those who are new to this. Also this is a big downgrade from THUG and THUG2 in graphics, and story. The Create a Modes are figgin' sweet, more if you have an EyeToy to put your self in the game. So unless your a hard-core Tony Hawk fan, rent it first. ... 5 stars (great game) - Very addictive game. I cruised through the first level and now I am really challenged with the second and there are three more to go after that. 5 stars (A Fun & Addictive Game) - I recently started playing several computer games, and this one was recommended to me by a friend - she said it could be addicting, and I must say that she was right! I have been playing Jewel Quest on and off for several months now, and it seems as if the levels will never end. I think this is a good thing, because once you solve a game, you usually don't play it again. Because of the sheer # of levels, this game can provide many, many hours of enjoyment (or frustration....) One of the great features of this game is that you are never made to start all over again - You keep working on the same board until you conquer it. After you've attempted the same board several times without beating it, you are given the option to just skip that particular level, and move on. I personally never choose that option, but I like to know that the option is available if I get too frustrated with the difficulty of a particular section. The goal of Jewel Quest is to match various items - you must match at least 3 of the same item in a row or colum. By doing this, you turn the "sand" tiles to "gold", and you must get the entire grid gold within a specific period of time. It may sound easy, but as you move along the levels, it actually gets quite difficult. Overall, I would recommend this game to anyone who enjoys matching games where there is increasing levels of difficulty. My thought is that it's probably more appropriate for adults as opposed to children. 5 stars (Fun for all) - Fun game. Can be habit forming, if you do not succed the first time it lets you try again and again after so many tries it moves you to the next level, onlike some games that says you done for. some of the games do get boring after you have played them a half dozen times before moving to the n...
