Band in a Box 2005

5 stars (Simply Incredible, fantastic sofware for beginner and pro) - Especially for the beginner, now you can have a rhythm section to back you up. You can change the key, follow the notes on screen, change tempo. And your accompaniment never tires, always is on the beat, and always in tune. This is extremely valuable for anyone learning jazz. This is probably the best single investment that a jazz student could make. 5 stars (Great software for musicians) - This is a great piece of software if you play any kind of a musical instrument or are a vocalist and want to practice playing songs with a virtual band. You just type in the chords, select a style and tempo and the software comes up with an arrangement in that style. Depending on which style you pick there will be different instruments in the arrangement. There are around 200 built in styles in various genres such as jazz, latin, country, pop etc. The arrangements are surprisingly good, especially if you can send the midi to an external keyboard. The software was very easy to install on Windows XP. I'm using it to work on practicing jazz standards on the piano but playing them the way I would in a band situation which is very different from the way I would play them solo. I have been able to quickly enter the chords of the song by typing in their names (eg Em7b5), pick a style and have band in a box come up with an arrangement. I then mute out the piano part and play along with the program to try out different ideas for comping. If I want to practice soloing I just mute out more instruments. I would expect that it would be equally useful for many other instruments. I also use it to print out fake book type lead sheets and have found the transpose feature to be very useful as it transposes the chord symbols along with the music. 5 stars (Great for Kids of all ages) - I bought this for my grandkids. They range in age form 6 to 15 and I must say they all really have gotten into it. They have created some really great characters and I really am happy I found this program. 3 stars (Runs slow) - I have a fairly new computer with 512 Meg of RAM. The program is so slow that my kids will not use it. I am considering upgrading my computer RAM to 1024 Meg just for this software, because I want to expose my kids to Solidworks. FileMaker Pro 7 Mac

5 stars (This version is lightyears away from earlier versions) - I'm a database professional, one of the few MySQL Certified Professionals in the country. I've been familiar with dBase, InfoFile, Clarion, Microsoft Access, FoxPro, Oracle, SQL Server and PostgreSQL, most since their earliest incarnations. I've been tinkering with FileMaker since version 3 (1995). It never seemed much more than an oh-so-slightly souped-up version of the database in ClarisWorks/AppleWorks. I've always evaluated FileMaker's time-limited downloads, but was never impressed. But version 7 is a quantum leap, highly matured. If you want a replacement for the buggy and unstable Microsoft Access, here it is. On a note, I bought a copy of FileMaker 7 on eBay. When I registered it, FileMaker told me that it was a pirated copy, which diminished my opinion of that online service. I believe that if "a software is good enough to use, it's good enough to pay for". On a shoestring budget, I needed to find the best price, and it was here on Amazon. 5 stars (Amazing) - The improvements made over version 6 are monumental! 1 stars (Do NOT buy this.) - I just upgraded to version 7. Every other negative comment made by others here is true, plus they just do NOT answer e-mails. I was unable to register my upgrade copy. I sent four e-mails and not a single one was answered. I finally called and was told there was a bug in the registraion of "some" copies and not to type my name in the name field, but my company name and leave the company field blank. Yup, that worked. Now, if the registration is that buggy, they have no e-mail customer support, and the upgrades are OUTRAGEOUSLY expensive (and see other reviews for lack of fit and finnish), why would you buy it? God of War

4 stars (not for kids) - God of War is a great game! But not for younger players. The bad things you do are have sex, there is lots of blood, lot of bad language. This is a great game for older players though. You could do excellent combos such as grab an enemy and rip them straight in half! You get awsome weapons too! You get two long chains that are melted into Kratos' arms. At the end of the chains there are blades. These are called the Blades of Chaos. These blades are fast and cause a lot of damage, that is if you upgrade the swords to max. 5 stars (As good as action gets) - This game does not have many flaws it is a hell of a lot of fun and i really enjoyed playing it. The only downside is that it is a little short well maybe not short but you don't want it to stop. Its gory, beautiful, challenging, a great game with a lot to offer. 5 stars (Wow) - It takes a great deal for me to buy M rated games. I swear by my belief that violence isn't needed to make a videogame good (though I'll never believe in censorship), and nudity should have never even been mentioned in the same sentence. For a long time videogames were geared toward children. Yes, those children grew up. But, and this is big, those one-time children also had children who will no doubt play video games. And the rating system sucks, to be completely honest. But with that out of the way, I highly recommend this game (what a change, huh?). It is easily the best PS2 game of 2005, even better than Metal Gear Solid 3. And it's better because it's more of an experience than an actual game. There are few moments when you can put the controller down. Everything is interactive, with mini-games popping up in the oddest places to change the pace. Power Chinese DVD Case

5 stars (Substance over style) - Asthetics aside, the program runs great, and wouldn't you know it, actually does as advertised. Being sub-beginner mandarin student if such a catagory existed, and even I took alot away from this. Great buy, all around. 5 stars (Have fun learning to read and write Chinese) - This program definitely deserves a review. I found it so much fun to work with that I stayed up all night, as long as I could keep my eyes open. It feels more like playing the game than investing an effort in learning. It is beautifully structures - it seems just to be made perfect for Western minds, or rather for people who have short time span. The program teaches grammar, too, in a way that seems more like watching a commercial on TV. It is offered in easily digestable bits, which are immediately followed through practice that is structured just like playing a game. New characters are introduced throughout the program and through the exercises. Information about every Chinese character is available throughout the program. All you need to do is click on the character you don't know, or that you might have forgotten, to see how it's written (stroke order and count, which are by the way, very colorful), to hear it pronounced, or to check out the pinyin spelling. You never feel stuck. Some characters are "deconstructed" to provide some possible logic that may help in memorizing the character. There are also few cultural bits and pieces, and even videos with people who have mastered the ability to speak Chinese fluently - for motivation and encouragement. The program is really good throughout in taking the stress out of learning Chinese characters, in making it as easy and enjoyable as possible and in motivating you to keep going. 5 stars (FUN & EASY WAY TO LEARN CHINESE CHARACTERS) - This program definitely deserves a review. eMedia Guitar Method Version 3

5 stars (Very nice) - I love this program. As a beginner learning without lessons I was able to pick up plenty of chords from books. The problem for me was learning proper timing and strumming techniques. You cannot get that information from a book; you need someone to show you. This CD does that. I noticed another user warning that the program does not run well on new computers. However, I have a P4 with XP pro and all the updates and it runs fine for me. 4 stars (Good product.) - This software makes learning guitar fairly simple. The lessons are good and have a lot of help available if and when you need it. The program installs fine and the only problem I've had with it was that my microphone wouldn't work with it. (But you don't use the mic much so hey, that wasn't too big of a deal.) I was kinda iffy about buying this at first because the reviews that were here on Amazon sounded like plugs written by the company or something. (Who talks like that in real life?) But I did end up buying it, and it delivers what it says. 4 out of 5 stars. 5 stars (Highly Recommaned) - I highly recommand this package! Nova Art Explosion 800-000 Clip Art

1 stars (quantity not quality) - 800,000 images without keywords - the only useful parts of this collection are the classic and traditional .tif's that you can take into illustrator and turn into vector. The high res images aren't, the clipart is less than microsoft office online quality and I've gotten far more use out of a 50,000 image collection b/c they took the time to keyword and catagorize the collection. If you like to look thru a book and put in one of the 32 disks and then find the image - then this collection is for you. If you want to have any sort of search capabilites, look elsewhere. 5 stars (No more feeling bad!) - I am so pleased with this purchase!! Under normal circumstances if I spend anything over $1.00 I get caught in a spiral of buyers regret. This is a feeling that I have grown accustomed to. When I received the 800,000 through the mail I shredded open the box and started skimming through what new images I could play with. I was astonished! Then, I realized something.....or rather a lack of something. I felt no remorse for buying this! I finally had a collection of clip art that could provide an abundant amount of images for collages, labels, calendars, scrapbooks, and everything else I wanted to do. 5 stars (The kids love it!) - I run the after school program at the local JR high where i work. Broderbund 3D Home Architect Design Suite Deluxe 6

4 stars (Good but not excellent) - I have tested a lot of programs for house design, and this one is one of the easiest to use, it is remarkable that there a lot of functions missing like copy and paste objects in the usual way , but it have the duplicate option (what im talking here is that some standarization is missing) you canot change the attributes of multiple objects, so you need to change the color of every single piece of wall one by one. Apart from theese little interface details, the resulting images in 3d are very nice and realistic, the product is discontinued by the company which is now selling all the components separately, so there must be a limmited quantity of copies of this package remaining. To end my review let me say that between all the programs i tested i decided to buy this one and im happy with my choice 4 stars (Really not that bad.) - I've read these reviews and some people love it and some people hate it. And I disagree with the person that uses it just to fool around with it, and said that anyone who would use this for a real life project is stupid. I have been using it for the past month in my spare time (which isn't very much with a 4 month old), I have used it to draw a plan to renovate the first floor of our house. Sure, some things are a pain, like having to block views of walls, floors, etc. to move a chair or table, but overall, I think that if you really want to draw up a plan, this program isn't that bad. I'm sure there are other programs out there that will do a better job, but for 80 bucks or whatever, you get what you pay for. Doom 3 DVD Mac

4 stars (woot) - I don't actually own the mac version of this game but i do own and have beaten the PC version almost 3 times. I have, however, downloaded the new mac demo which runs pretty well on all low at my base line ibook G4 1.25 GHz with 256 mb of ram ati radeon mobility 9200 32 mb Vram. For the majority of the time, i get around 10 fps for the first 5 minutes or so and then it just seems to speed up. Some areas, I actually get about 45 fps which is pretty amazing. So anyways, i bought a 1 gb ram upgrade which, i hope, will allow me to play the game on low at 1024x768 with like 40 fps or so. What might have helped the most is that i downloaded the ATI radeon drivers for the mac version of my 9200 from the ati website. If you want to play this game on high or something, don't even try it becasue not only will you get bad performance, but the program automatically turns on like an ultimate pixel shader needing thing that will make the game look like crap on a 9200. I remember the pistol was all chromed almost like pure silver and the faces were two toned: they were half the light tone and half the dark tone. in terms of gameplay overall from playing the PC version, the game scares you quite a bit if you play it for the first time for the first couple hours of gameplay and then here and there later on. When i played the mac version, i tried to remember everything but of course i failed and i was still scared a few times. 4 stars (Great product for the price) - I've tried using those $9 dollar products you get in the value sections of shops and they all stink. This product is just a little more and it works great and has wonderful features. The 3D element is perfect and the program is easy to use. The only down side that I saw is that there is a slight (but not much) limited selection of certain accessories, but you can usualy find something that will work. Otherwise, great. 1 stars (3D Home Architect Home Design Deluxe 6) - Very basic program. Would purchase again if price was $20.00 or less just for the basic house layout. 3 stars (Powerful but not user-friendly) - I have been using this product for about six months to redesign several rooms in our house. It is fairly flexible and powerful and has a good variety of colors, textures, materials, etc. to work with. However, don't believe the "intuitive, easy to use" claims made by the company producing this software. I have run into many problems where the program required me to do something unintuitive, such as raise all of the furniture in a room off the floor by 1 inch in order to be able to put a rug in the room. Also, you cannot "nudge" objects using the arrow keys as you can in almost any graphics program, so exact placement of objects becomes a frustrating game of, "Can I let go of the mouse on this exact pixel?" For the amount I paid (which was $20 more than it should have been because of Fry's' typical refusal to honor the rebate that they themselves advertised), it is not a bad program. But it's sad that there isn't anything out there that's much better. ...
